Now
we did this in a light hearted way to emphasize that the reason most
people do not like leglocks is that they have certain preconceptions
that are incorrect. You know what I am talking about. Many
schools do not teach leglocks or encourage them. When I was first
training with famous black belt Sergio Montiero (he hates when I say
that) He really considered leglocks to be from the suburbs or
ghetto. He was a classic Brazilian instructor. Of course
while he did not like them he understood them and their effectiveness. Some
of the incorrect preconceptions are as follows: 1.
They are ineffective or hard to use: Any technique done
incorrectly is useless. Leglocks just further emphasize the need
for proper control and leverage. When you try to submit someone
using a leg attack you are putting your small arms (small muscles)
against his legs. (big muscles). Your leverage has to be right on
or else. 2.
I end up getting mounted when I fall back into a leglock.
Well for one why are you falling straight back. Most of the good
leglock fighters I have spoken to always fall sideways. (keeps
you butt from getting bruised like you are a rump ranger) Try it
in your training and see if it helps. Also, the fight does not
end when you fall back. Just like any move you have to have
correct control points or your opponent will escape. 3.
Double leglock death matches: I agree there is
nothing worse then seeing two guys trying to rip each others ankles
off. Don't get frustrated learn correct leg escapes so you are
not forced into desperation. 4.
My instructor don't like them: One of the hardest
parts is breaking free of the mold and charting your own course.
Your instructors pride is not on the line when you go into a match or
fight. Learn what you fear and you will not have as much to
fear. 5.
I hate tapping to leglocks: Read number four
over and over again until it burns into your pea brain. AS
ALWAYS.........TRAIN HARD and NEVER QUIT
